National Parks and Leisure Australia Innovation Award

A walkway replaced a former rough track through protected harbour foreshore lands at Kirribilli.  Proximity to public access and sensitive parklands made this project an extremely delicate operation.  Strict controls, including silt and erosion barriers, were put in place to ensure safe access to the site and prevent any construction works affecting the marine environment, particularly during the wet period of construction.

Strategic planning and limited access required the use of mobile cranes to remove waste from the site and lower construction materials to each work zone without damage to the protected flora.

The project included installation of two stepped-metal, mono-beam walkway sections linked by sandstone paved seating platforms and erected in one continuous operation.

Remedial works were undertaken on the trees that had declined in health over recent years, and new native shrubs and groundcovers were planted.
